Math is always more fun when you can use hands on materials to solve problems. Base-ten blocks help us understanding place value and compose or decompose numbers. Fraction circles help us better understand fraction values and equivalent fractions. Geo Boards help us understand shapes; and the list goes on! I am fortunate to have many of these items readily available for students to use in the classroom, and do not always "need" to use virtual manipulatives. However, sometimes online tools are more appropriate for a task and they are more readily available for home use if your student is having a difficult time with a homework assignment. With this in mind, I have uploaded some links that I like to use. Some are more user friendly than others but each site has something useful to offer so I've posted several for you to choose from.
This is one of my favorites- Glencoe (and works well with Chrome) Another great site... NCTM Illuminations Math in Focus National Library of Virtual Manipulatives Geogebra for Elementary Math Games and Manipulatives This is also a great site for more information on math learning apps www.mathlearningcenter.org/resources/apps Please email me anytime to let me know if there is anything you'd like to hear more about!

We are off to a great start with learning our multiplication facts and I couldn't be prouder! Students in both math groups have worked diligently at the start of every class to learn their facts. So far we have mastered our 0s and 1s facts. We will be starting Karate Math on Monday, at which time all students will be awarded their first belt for mastering their ones facts. We will begin learning our 2s next week. Students will earn their next belt after each fact (0-10) is mastered. Students will have a belt advancement sheet here at school to keep track of their progress. Students can take a picture of their belt advancement document and post it on their student Class Dojo accounts where you will be able to see and comment on how well your child is doing.
Do you have a curious third grader who enjoys questioning why things work or happen the way they do? Then Mystery Doug is for you! Mystery Doug uploads new video clips every week based on curious questions from students across the nation. Each video is a fun and informational 5 minutes. At the end, students can ask Doug a question of their own and/or vote on a question for the following week. Each week a new question is picked, and who knows, maybe your students question will win! If your interested in exploring Mystery Doug just click the link below, and "stay curious my friends"~Doug.
Mystery Doug This week we will be starting our ABC Cursive Boot Camp! During this time students will be working on learning 2-3 letters per week. Once letters are mastered we will begin reading and writing passages in cursive. To start off we will be working on tracing and then trying on our own. Check out some of the links below if your child would like to practice more at home! 26 pages of mixed case practice Mixed case tracing 2 page alphabet tracing I am excited to announce a new and innovative change happening in the upper grades at CPS this coming school year! Starting August 2018 your students will have the incredible opportunity to experience learning with specialized educators. Having earned both my Bachelors of Science and Masters of Education in Mathematics, my true passion and area of expertise is in having fun with numbers and teaching students how to do the same. And I am happy to say this year I will be teaching all third grade students mathematics and Ms. Bashaw will teaching literacy. Students will have their own homerooms and homeroom teachers will be teaching other subject areas such as Science, Social Studies, Writing, and Computer Literacy. Students will continue to have Specials (P.E., Music, Art...) and these will be with their homeroom group. I am also looking forward to offering special interest "clubs" for students to join such as a journalist club, newsletter committee, Girl CODE, Boy CODE, and of course a math and tech club. If your student expresses interest in one of these activities a permission slip will be sent home with further details and meeting times. Please come back to this site often for further updates and classroom happenings throughout the year!

AuthorHello! My name is Miss Shannon and this will be my 5th year teaching at CPS. After teaching kindergarten for several years, I transferred to third grade and I am loving it! Although my years teaching kindergarten were some of my favorite times, third grade is a year where your student becomes more independent and vested in their learning. We experiment in science, manipulate numbers, compare fractions, multiply and divide in math, conduct research and develop our writing and so, so much more. It is a year of hard work and perseverance and of course a whole lot of fun in the process. Meaningful friendships are established amongst students and they learn how to work together and collaborate on a variety of projects. I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year!
